Services
I help parents understand the IEP and 504 processes and empower families to feel confident and educated in the complicated process that is special education. I can support your understanding of your child’s IEP or 504 and empower you to advocate for your child’s services in the school setting. I also serve as a special education consultant and expert witness.
I have over 20 years of experience in the field of education as a special education teacher, case manager, coach, administrator, and inclusion facilitator. I have supported both the compliance management and instructional side of education, ensuring high-quality IEP creation. Both my undergraduate and masters degrees are in special education, and I am currently a PhD candidate in special education. I know how to navigate the system of special education.
I am also a parent of a child with a low-incidence disability. I know how it feels to be on the other side of the table during an IEP meeting.
IEP documents review and recommendations:
- I can help you navigate through the special education system and provide you with next steps to take. We can discuss your main concerns, any relevant historical information about your child’s educational experience, and the goals you have for your child.
- I will conduct a thorough review of your child’s IEP draft, related documents, and evaluations to provide you with a list of recommendations per IEP section, as well as ways to empower you as a crucial IEP team member.
Special Education Consultant and Expert Witness:
- I can provide consultation and testimony on custody cases involving children with disabilities.
- With extensive experience in IEP record reviews and a deep understanding of IDEA, I can provide assistance as a special education consultant and expert witness through due process and custody hearings involving children with disabilities.
Cara was a wonderful resource in the process of getting my son a 504 plan. I went into the process completely overwhelmed and undereducated by the school system. After a 30 minute phone call, Cara had explained the process to me, went over the details of my son’s evaluations, listened to my concerns, and promised to send me a report with all of the necessary recommendations of accommodations I should be asking for at our meeting. The school board was so impressed with our suggestions that they just copied and pasted it into our 504 plan. I would highly recommend using Cara as a resource when going through the process!
